About The Site

Are you an independent artist? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed trying to balance the music with the business? This site was created to help you with the common issues that pop up in this new era of bits, bytes and blogs.

It's not easy being an independent artist. It doesn't matter if you have a day job or not. Since it's inception in 2006, The Solo Album has been a resource of information and perspective for artists looking to make sense of the challenges and misconceptions faced when working towards a career within the music industry.

On this site, you'll find a variety of information and commentary on subjects important to independent artists.

About The Podcast

Episodes on The Solo Album Podcast are designed for repeat listening sessions, structured around common issues relevant to independent artists. This podcast is where you can listen to interviews and commentary from other independent artists who have unique experiences and insights to share with others. Discussion is centered around process and is less focused on the music.

Please visit The Solo Album Podcast page.

About The Forum

Wouldn't you agree that the only way to start promoting your music is to go online and post about it yourself? Why? Because no one else will. Why? Because you're not already famous. Why? Because no one is talking about your music. Why? Because you're not already famous.

ENOUGH!

The forum was created specifically for you, the independent recording artist. Most members of the forum are also independent recording artists themselves. The community exists for your first level of support. Consider these members your peers. I wouldn't consider them fans (yet), but conversely, they are certainly not your competition.

You want to post about your music? Go right ahead. The forum is meant as an outlet in which to network and share your music. From the demo to the finished product, all recording stories are welcome here.

Are you an independent recording artist? Do you have a recording story? How about studio footage or photos? Rough cuts of some new tracks? A finished product?

Any style. Any genre. Any time. Tell your story. Read about others.

Please visit The Solo Album Forum.

About The Guy Running The Site

That would be me, Brian Dobbs. I play drums for Concrete Prophet, and yes, I have a day job.

I earned a degree in Visual Arts from UMBC in 2003. Since then, I have worked as a home theater technician, post-production assistant, a support desk manager and currently serve as a deputy webmaster at a non-profit.

Since 1997, I've been in and out of six different bands.
  • Concrete Prophet (2005-Present)
  • Refuge (2005)
  • Miss Tess a.k.a Sipping Sugar (2004)
  • Elephant Spiral (2004)
  • Speeddogs (2001)
  • Solarcult (2000-2001)
  • Jax n' Jive (1997-2000)
In 2006 I released a solo album titled, The History Of Recorded Music. This site launched with that release. I originally intended for The Solo Album site to be a reference site for other aspiring independent recording artists, by showing them how I recorded my album. Every once in a while I come up with a new idea on how to expand the site, which is what you see now.
